Certificate III in Horticulture

TAFE SA's Certificate III in Horticulture gives students the practical skills and technical knowledge to work as a horticulturist or gardener across nurseries, parks, gardens and landscape settings. Delivered over 12 months through a blend of classroom, online and hands-on campus learning, the course covers plant identification and culture, control of pests, diseases and weeds, safe handling, transport and application of chemicals, soil improvement, and operation of machinery, irrigation and equipment. Entry requires completion of a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Assessment (LLND). Students complete all 11 core units and choose 6 elective units from a wide range of specialisations, including hydroponic systems, landscape and turf maintenance, native seed collection, plant propagation, ecosystem reconstruction and tractor operation, allowing them to build expertise in the areas of horticulture that interest them most. The course is available part time, and in some locations full time, at TAFE SA's Barossa Valley, Mount Gambier, Port Lincoln and Urrbrae campuses, the latter home to TAFE SA's dedicated horticulture training grounds. Concession, subsidised and full-fee rates apply depending on eligibility. TAFE SA also offers this qualification to international students. Graduates are well placed for outdoor, practical careers as horticulturists or gardeners, with pathways into further study in conservation, land management or landscape design.
