Certificate III in Horticulture

The Certificate III in Horticulture (AHC30722) at TasTAFE suits people who enjoy working outdoors and want to develop their skills and knowledge at a more advanced level in the horticulture industry. The qualification provides a general vocational outcome in amenity horticulture, allowing students to develop skills in growing plants for recreational or ornamental purposes and in establishing and supervising amenity horticulture sites such as botanic or public gardens, historic gardens and landscapes, sports facilities and urban or public spaces. The course offers extensive hands-on learning, developing skills in providing information on plants and their culture, implementing propagation, plant nutrition and plant establishment programs, and preparing growing media. Students also learn to control weeds, plant pests, diseases and disorders, prepare, apply, transport and store chemicals, implement soil improvements for garden and turf areas, assist with landscape construction, operate pressurised irrigation systems and perform specialist amenity pruning.

Domestically the course is offered as an on-campus program at Alanvale, Burnie and Clarence, and in the workplace for new and existing workers including apprentices and trainees, combining on-the-job training, off-the-job workshops and self-paced study; tuition is $2,730 subsidised or $410 concession, with commercial pricing on application, plus $65.50 for the ChemCert manual and card. International students study for 52 weeks in Hobart or Launceston at 20 hours per week with a February intake, at AUD $14,240, including 5–10 days of industry work placement. On completion, graduates are prepared for work at a supervisory level within the industry.
