Certificate III in Individual Support

The CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) is a nationally accredited qualification offered by The Business School (TBS) in Campsie, Sydney, designed for people who want to work in community and/or residential settings providing person-centred support to individuals who require assistance due to ageing, disability, or other circumstances. The course reflects the role of support workers who use discretion and judgement while following an individualised care plan, drawing on a mix of factual, technical, and some theoretical knowledge. To be awarded the qualification, students must demonstrate competency across fifteen units in total: nine core units covering areas such as providing individualised support, recognising healthy body systems, infection prevention and control, and working legally and ethically, plus six elective units focused on ageing-specific skills including dementia support, working effectively in aged care, and delivering care using a palliative approach. A mandatory 120 hours of vocational work placement is built into the course, as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency, giving students hands-on experience in a real aged care or support environment. Training is delivered face-to-face at TBS's Campsie campus, supported by the college's Learning Management System for e-learning resources, with students required to attend a minimum of 20 scheduled course contact hours per week over the 60-week program. Assessment combines direct observation in the classroom and simulated workplace, product-based methods such as reports, portfolios and role plays, and written and verbal questioning. Graduates are prepared for entry-level roles such as Aged Care Support Worker, Disability Support Worker, Personal Care Assistant, and Community Support Worker, and may choose to continue their studies with CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support or CHC43121 Certificate IV in Disability Support.
