About This Course

The CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) at Risen Star College of Technology & Business develops the knowledge and practical skills required to provide person-centred support in disability and community care environments, focusing on assisting individuals with daily living activities, promoting independence and supporting wellbeing in a respectful and safe manner. It reflects the role of workers in community, home or residential care settings who work under supervision and delegation as part of a multi-disciplinary team, following an individualised plan.

Students combine knowledge-based learning with workplace-based training, developing skills in communication, working with diverse people and following individualised support plans, alongside safe work practices, legal and ethical responsibilities, infection prevention and control, first aid and recognising healthy body systems. Workplace-based learning is a mandatory component: Risen Star College requires a minimum of 245 hours in a real disability or community care setting, and while the College provides guidance in finding a placement, placement is not guaranteed.

The course suits people entering the disability support sector as well as those already in care roles who want to formalise and build on their existing skills. International students study face-to-face at the Stones Corner campus in Brisbane, while domestic students complete the same qualification through blended online delivery.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

Domestic students

Be at least 18 years old at the time of commencing the course.
Have successfully completed Year 12.
Pass the Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy Skills (LLND) assessment at Level 3.
Have been working in the healthcare industry in a community or residential/aged care setting for at least three (3) months, and be able to complete workplace assessment with the current employer.
Have successfully completed the Pre-Training Review.

International students

Be at least 18 years old at the time of commencing the course.
Have successfully completed Australian Year 12 or equivalent schooling overseas.
Provide evidence of an English language test of IELTS with an overall score of 6.0, or an equivalent test approved by the Department of Home Affairs, or fall into an exemption category.
Pass the Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy Skills (LLND) assessment at Level 3.
Have successfully completed the Pre-Training Review.

Pre-placement requirements (all students)

Before commencing workplace-based learning, students may be required to obtain the following, as applicable to the host workplace:

Working with Children Check (Blue Card)
NDIS Worker Screening Clearance
National Police Check
Evidence of required vaccinations (for example influenza and COVID-19, as required by the workplace)
Training in infection control and manual handling

Disability Support Worker — provide person-centred support to individuals living with disability, assisting with daily living activities, supporting independence and helping clients participate in community and social activities.
Personal Care Assistant (Disability Support) — support individuals with personal care tasks such as hygiene, mobility and daily routines, maintaining dignity, comfort and wellbeing.
Community Support Worker — assist individuals to access support services, participate in programs and maintain independence in their daily lives.
NDIS Support Worker — support participants under the National Disability Insurance Scheme with individual goals, daily activities and community engagement in line with support plans.
Residential Support Worker — support individuals living in residential or supported accommodation settings, assisting with daily routines and contributing to a safe and supportive living environment.
Home Care Support Worker — support individuals in their own homes with daily living tasks, personal care and community participation.

Graduates may progress to the CHC52025 Diploma of Community Services at Risen Star College.
