Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who perform a broad range of tasks on a variety of light vehicles in the automotive retail, service, and repair industry. Across its 36 units of competency — 20 core and 16 electives — students build the full technical skill set of a light vehicle mechanic, beginning with safe working practices, the use and maintenance of tools and equipment, and environmental and sustainability best practice in an automotive workplace. Core studies then move through inspecting and servicing engines, diagnosing and repairing cooling systems, petrol fuel systems and emission control systems, and working across light vehicle steering, suspension and hydraulic braking systems. A substantial electrical component covers testing and repairing basic electrical circuits, batteries, starting and charging systems, ignition systems and spark ignition engine management, culminating in developing and carrying out diagnostic test strategies. Elective studies extend into measuring equipment, wheel balancing, forced induction systems, automatic transmissions, final drive assemblies, compression ignition engine management, wiring harnesses and looms, vehicle lighting, instruments and warning systems, and electronic body management systems. The course runs over 55 weeks and is delivered in classroom and simulated workshop settings at Xceed's campus at 6 Eton Road, Keswick, South Australia, with students attending an average of 7 hours per week of guided learning during training weeks, excluding term breaks. Assessment methods may include projects and research, written assignments, presentations and role play, and unit skill tests. Learners who successfully complete this qualification may progress into further studies such as the AUR40216 Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis.
