Certificate III in Painting and Decorating

This qualification provides a trade outcome in painting and decorating for residential and commercial construction work. Across 29 units of competency students learn to prepare both existing coated and uncoated surfaces for painting, apply paint by brush, roller and spray, match specific paint colours, apply stains and clear timber finishes, remove and apply wallpaper, apply decorative and texture coat finishes, apply protective paint coating systems and remove graffiti and apply anti-graffiti coatings. The program also covers the safety-critical parts of the trade — working safely with lead-painted surfaces, working safely to encapsulate non-friable asbestos, working safely at heights, erecting and dismantling restricted height scaffolding, erecting and maintaining trestle and plank systems and operating elevated work platforms up to 11 metres — alongside handling and storing materials, using painting and decorating tools and equipment, removing and replacing doors and window components, reading and interpreting plans and specifications, and calculating costs of construction work. State and territory jurisdictions may have different licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements, and relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm those requirements. Completion of the general construction induction training program is required by anyone carrying out construction work. Delivered over 52 weeks at the Sydney campus in a blended face-to-face and online format at 20 hours per week, the course prepares graduates for employment as a painter and decorator. After achieving this qualification, candidates may undertake further studies in the related field, such as the Diploma of Building and Construction.
