The program is designed to build a strong foundation, covering essential core skills common to the wider construction industry as well as the advanced, specialist techniques of the solid plastering trade. Students begin with the construction fundamentals every site worker needs — applying basic levelling procedures, working effectively and sustainably in the construction industry, planning and organising work, conducting workplace communication, carrying out measurements and calculations, reading and interpreting plans and specifications, erecting and dismantling restricted-height scaffolding, and applying WHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry.

The trade-specific core then moves through handling solid plastering materials, using solid plastering tools and equipment, preparing surfaces for plastering, applying float and render to straight and curved surfaces, applying set coats, applying trowelled texture coat finishes, and restoring and renovating solid plasterwork. Elective units broaden the graduate's site capability with working safely at heights, erecting and maintaining trestle and plank systems, carrying out concreting to simple forms, using explosive power tools, and investigating business opportunities for those intending to work for themselves.

Baxter delivers the course over 92 weeks including holidays, on campus and face-to-face, using a combination of theory, practical and/or project assessments.
