In the RMIT Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, based in Melbourne, you will learn how to: work effectively in the accounting and bookkeeping industry establish, operate and maintain a computerised accounting system for small business entities, recording day-to-day business transactions and producing financial reports for decision-making perform financial calculations and write simple business documents design and construct spreadsheets and apply their use to produce a variety of operating budgets determine employee entitlements and make payments of wages and salaries calculate GST and prepare business activity statements (BAS) apply a knowledge of our legal and regulatory environment to your work in this industry. You will undertake structured learning activities and authentic assessments within a simulated business environment, designed to replicate real-world work experiences. The course offers flexible study options including full-time and part-time day classes delivered on campus at Melbourne City Campus, or part-time evening classes delivered online via live interactive webinars that are recorded for later viewing. This caters for students who prefer face-to-face learning as well as those who need to study more independently.
The course is a Free TAFE priority course, meaning the Victorian Government may waive tuition fees for eligible students. For those not receiving a fee waiver, the 2026 fees are: AU$1,100 for a government subsidised place with concession, AU$5,500 for a government subsidised place without concession, and AU$9,750 for a full-fee place. International students are charged AU$13,000 (2026 total). A Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) of up to AU$373 also applies.
The Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping comprises 13 units — 10 core and 3 elective units — and assumes no previous work or study background in the field. Major areas of study include financial calculations, business documents, spreadsheets and budgeting, computerised accounting systems, financial recordkeeping and reporting, legal systems and regulatory requirements, payroll, Business Activity Statements (BAS), and the accounting and bookkeeping workplace.
Assessment in this course emphasises engaging and authentic work that replicates real-world job roles, using a simulated business environment with industry-standard software and templates. Assessment techniques include individual and group work, oral and written presentations, project reports, role plays, case studies, and supervised tests.
