About This Course

Ageing support workers work with people from vastly different cultural and social backgrounds, including mothers, fathers, grandparents and great grandparents who need support from others to live with care or in care facilities. Ageing Support workers: support the elderly at home and in regulated care services; plan support activities to enhance socialisation, good mental health and physical condition of residents and clients; set up indoor and outdoor activities and entertainment; support residents and clients exercise their mental agility; prepare and manage medication intake. A nationally recognised qualification in Ageing Support is about gaining the skills and knowledge to work in aged care environments supporting older people in services or in their own homes.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

Students must complete a Pre-Training Review, meet the Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skill standards for Certificate III level study and demonstrate that they are a suitable candidate for this course.
It is recommended that students have attained the age of 18 by the course commencement date.
MCIE welcomes all people with disabilities, learning differences and medical conditions. Acceptance in this course is subject to the candidate being able to undertake all course requirements as discussed in the Pre-Training Review, with reasonable adjustment where applicable.
All participants require a Unique Student Identification (USI) number.
Students must have sufficient digital literacy skills to access online content, enter answers to written questions and communicate with trainers via email, the student portal and the learning management system.
Students must have access to a computer or laptop to complete the course.
Candidates must provide evidence that they have applied for: NDIS Check, Police Check, Working with Children Check, Working with Vulnerable People Registration.
Must agree to providing evidence that the required Flu and COVID-19 vaccinations have been taken one month before placement.
There are no formal prerequisites for this qualification.

How much does the Certificate IV in Ageing Support cost?

The full fee for domestic students is $7,950. Government subsidised fees are also available: Regional VIC delivery costs $200 and Melbourne Metropolitan delivery costs $4,200. Concession fees are $40 for Regional VIC delivery and $840 for Melbourne Metropolitan delivery. Traineeship costs $250, and textbooks are an additional $140. Eligibility criteria applies.

How many work placement hours are required and how does MCIE support students in finding placement?

Students must complete 120 mandatory placement hours in a regulated Aged Care facility. MCIE Work Placement Officers facilitate work placement for students, and the MCIE Work Placement Coordinator will organise a local placement with one of their host employers or support students in organising their own.

What checks and vaccinations are required before starting work placement?

To complete work placement in an aged care environment, candidates must provide evidence that they have applied for an NDIS Check, Police Check, Working with Children Check, and Working with Vulnerable People Registration. They must also agree to providing evidence that the required Flu and COVID-19 vaccinations have been taken one month before placement.

What assessment methods are used in this course?

Assessment for this program includes written tasks, long and short answer questions, group tasks, oral presentations, role plays, scenarios, work placement journals, logbooks, portfolios and projects. Most assessments are submitted online via a Learning Management System (LMS).

Is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) available for this qualification?
