Built for qualified technicians ready to take on the trickiest jobs in the workshop, Atlas College's Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis focuses entirely on complex fault diagnosis — the diagnostic reasoning and specialist testing that separates a senior technician from a general mechanic.
The course runs 32 weeks including holidays, made up of 26 tuition weeks at 20 hours a week, delivered face-to-face across the Wollongong campus (theory) and the Ingleburn workshop (practical). Entry builds on a completed Automotive Mechanical Certificate III, or demonstrated equivalent competency, making this a genuine specialisation rather than an entry-level qualification.
Across 10 units of competency — 1 core and 9 electives — students work through complex fault diagnosis in steering and suspension, petrol and diesel engines, automatic transmission and driveline systems, engine management, vehicle stability control, forced-induction systems, and braking systems.
Graduates are prepared for senior diagnostic roles as automotive diagnostic technicians or automotive master technicians, with a further pathway into the AUR50216 Diploma in Automotive Technology.
