Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who perform advanced diagnostic tasks in the automotive retail, service, and repair industry. It builds on trade-level mechanical skills to develop the higher-order fault-finding capability expected of a senior technician working on complex, intermittent and system-level problems. The course comprises 10 units of competency, structured around the core unit Diagnose complex system faults, which underpins the diagnostic methodology applied throughout the qualification. Elective studies then apply that methodology across the major vehicle systems: diagnosing complex faults in light vehicle petrol engines and diesel engines, in engine management systems, in braking systems, in safety systems, in steering and suspension systems, and in automatic transmission and driveline systems. The program also covers monitoring environmental and sustainability best practice in an automotive workplace, and estimating and quoting automotive mechanical and electrical repairs — the commercial skills required when advising customers on diagnostic findings. The course runs over 24 weeks and is delivered in classroom and simulated workshop settings at Xceed's campus at 6 Eton Road, Keswick, South Australia, with students attending an average of 4 hours per week of guided learning during training weeks, excluding term breaks. Assessment methods may include projects and research, written assignments, presentations and role play, and unit skill tests. Learners who successfully complete this qualification may progress into further studies such as the AUR50116 Diploma of Automotive Management or other relevant qualifications.
