Certificate IV in Building and Construction

The Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) is designed to meet the needs of builders and managers of small to medium-sized building businesses. Graduates may also become the appropriately licensed person with responsibility under the relevant building licensing authority in their State or Territory, noting that licensing requirements vary across Australia and additional requirements may apply to attain full builder registration.

The qualification covers the core skills common to the construction industry, including managing small business finances, applying building codes and safety standards, preparing construction contracts, estimating and costing projects, scheduling materials, planning and supervising building work, and interpreting plans and specifications. Training and assessment are delivered in a real or closely simulated workplace environment, reflecting industry expectations for this trade.

Studied over 52 weeks at Horizon Training Institute's Geelong campus, the course prepares students for occupational titles such as builder and construction manager. On completion, graduates may pursue further study through the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) or progress into supervisory and management roles within the construction industry.
