The CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction reflects the role of builders, site managers and managers of small to medium-sized building businesses who apply structural principles, codes, standards and legal requirements to Class 1 and 10 construction (up to two storeys) and Class 2 to 9 Type C buildings. Graduates are trained to plan and supervise safe building and construction work, prepare and administer contracts, and apply quality principles across a project — covering both the hands-on building side and the site-management side, including coordinating specialised trade crews, ensuring product compliance and managing weather- and site-related challenges. Across its 20 units of competency, students build skills in applying building codes and standards, managing work health and safety, planning and communicating on-site, reading and interpreting plans and specifications, preparing building sketches, and minimising site waste, alongside elective units in contract administration, cost estimation, labour and material scheduling, energy-efficient building science and small business finance. The course runs over 52 weeks, including 40 weeks of training and 12 weeks of holidays, delivered face-to-face through on-campus classes and workshop sessions at VIC's Brisbane, Gold Coast and Adelaide campuses. Graduates are prepared for roles such as Builder, Construction Supervisor, Site Manager, Site Supervisor and Leading Hand.
