About This Course

This course is designed to introduce learners to the recognised trade of Carpentry. Learners completing this course will be job ready to undertake an apprenticeship in the construction industry (carpentry), and provide meaningful credit towards further study in various qualifications. Carpentry involves both physical labour and problem solving. It's a dynamic career that keeps you active and engaged. On completion of the course, you can branch into Framing, Formwork, or Fixing. Carpenters often go on to become builders and project managers or are self-employed. If you are looking to join the construction industry, this is the course for you.

Requirements

Applicants must be 16 years and over at the time of course commencement.
Any student under the age of 17 must provide a Transition from School form prior to undertaking this course, unless they have completed Year 12 or an equivalent qualification (AQF Level II or above), in which case a school exemption is not required.
Applicants are expected to have literacy and numeracy skills at Year 10 or Year 11 or Australian Core Skills Framework Level 2.
Each student must complete a pre-training review as part of their application. The outcome of your pre-training review assists our teachers and trainers to better understand your capabilities prior to training and enables you to be matched to the right program.
Literacy and numeracy skills will be evaluated and you may be required to undertake a separate assessment.

Is this course eligible for Free TAFE?

Yes, this course is eligible for Free TAFE. Eligible Victorian students who elect to use their Free TAFE opportunity will not incur any tuition fees, however material and resources fees still apply. Additional costs include an Education Levy of $84.15, Materials fee of $450.00, and a Licence fee of $130.00.

What are the class days and times for this course?

For the July 2026 intake at East Geelong Campus, classes are held Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am to 4pm. Class times are indicative and may change before the course starts.

What further study options are available after completing this course?

After completing this course, you can progress to the CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry. Many Gordon courses offer pathways to higher qualifications within The Gordon and in some cases to university degrees, and your Gordon course may provide credit points which could reduce further study time.

How is the course assessed?

Assessment for this course is based on questioning, observations, and practical demonstrations.

Can I get credit for previous study or experience?

Yes. If you have previously completed any of the units of competency relevant to this course, you may be eligible for Credit Transfer (CT). Any previous relevant experience may qualify you for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
