During on-campus learning activities, you will be expected to carry out tasks in a simulated work environment that reflect the actual requirements for footwear production. These include producing accurate footwear patterns, recording accurate measurements and numerical data in pattern records, preparation of footwear components for the construction of footwear uppers, producing conclusive costing analysis of footwear, operating machinery which require numerical input, making intricate paper working patterns with pencil and knives, cutting precise footwear components with handheld knives, and pulling over of shoe uppers on lasts using hand tools and hammering of small tacks.
A range of adjustments to your study conditions can be organised through the Equitable Learning Service (ELS). This may include additional time allowances for comprehension and expression, use of specialised or assistive software to support literacy and numeracy, assistive technology to enhance vision or hearing, rest breaks to support memory, planning and organisation, and consideration of non-verbal communication appropriate to your disability or condition. It is recommended that you contact the ELS and discuss any adjustments with the program coordinator prior to commencing the program.
Yes, the program requires a range of physical abilities. Gross motor skills are needed for tasks such as manual handling involving hand tools like knives, hammers, and scissors, and positioning material and setting up equipment. Fine motor skills are required for making intricate paper working patterns, cutting precise footwear components, operating machines requiring minute adjustments, and pulling over shoe uppers on lasts. Physical and mental endurance is also required, including standing and walking for extended periods and maintaining a high level of concentration throughout the footwear production process. Adjustments will be considered in relation to individual circumstances and physical capacities, provided they do not compromise student safety.
RMIT offers several services to support students living with mental health conditions, including the Equitable Learning Services and Counselling and Psychological Services. The on-campus learning environment will require you to engage with peers and teaching staff, reflect on your work and respond appropriately to constructive feedback. Adjustments can be organised through the Equitable Learning Services, and you may be supported to take time off from your studies if you become unwell or have difficulties with behavioural stability until you are ready to recommence.
The program requires both verbal and social communication skills. You will need to understand and respond to verbal communication, verbally communicate clear instructions and explanations in a time responsive way, and work with clients to establish relationships, undertake assessment of requirements, and produce products in a safe manner. Social communication skills are also important, including the ability to recognise, interpret, use, and respond to non-verbal communication such as eye contact, gestures, facial expression, speaking volume, tone of voice, proximity, and verbal turn-taking, particularly in groupwork and collaborative activities in studio or workshop settings.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
