MEM40119 Certificate IV in Engineering (CRICOS 0100613) defines the skills and knowledge required for a higher engineering tradesperson within the metal, engineering, manufacturing and associated industries. At Baxter Institute the qualification is oriented towards heavy fabrication and welding, including post-trade work, and it is delivered with a substantial hands-on workshop component.

The qualification prepares students to understand and implement quality control techniques, exercise good interpersonal and communication skills, work from complex instructions and procedures, exercise discretion within their scope of responsibility, work under limited supervision either individually or in a team, take responsibility for assuring the quality of their own work, provide trade guidance and assistance as part of a work team, perform non-trade tasks incidental to the primary task, inspect products and materials for conformity with established operational standards, operate lifting equipment incidental to their work, and assist in the provision of training alongside supervisors and trainers.

Twelve core units cover safe and effective work in manufacturing and engineering, environmentally sustainable work practices, manual handling, organising and communicating information, engineering measurements and computations, computing technology, work planning, hand and power tools, on-the-job training assistance, and interpreting technical drawings. The elective bank is heavily weighted to welding — safe welding practices, process selection, oxy-acetylene, brazing and silver soldering, thermal cutting, and manual metal arc, gas metal arc, flux core arc and gas tungsten arc welding at routine and advanced levels — plus penetrant testing, workshop machines, geometric development, 2D and 3D CAD and process planning.

Baxter delivers the course over 94 weeks including holidays, face-to-face. Theory is delivered at 72-92 Langford Street, North Melbourne, and theory and practical at 201 Arden Street, North Melbourne. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply at the time of publication, although in some jurisdictions individual units may require a licence.
