You must have completed specific units of competency (or equivalent), including HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety, SISFFIT032 Complete pre-exercise screening and service orientation, SISFFIT033 Complete client fitness assessments, SISFFIT035 Plan group exercise sessions, SISFFIT036 Instruct group exercise sessions, SISFFIT040 Develop and instruct gym-based exercise programs for individual clients, and SISFFIT047 Use anatomy and physiology knowledge to support safe and effective exercise. You must also have completed at least the equivalent of Australian Year 10 and be at least 18 years of age.
Training takes place on campus and in working gyms. Through a partnership with Fitness First and Goodlife Health Clubs, students have access to state of the art gym facilities to put their theory into practice. Some trainers also bring their class outdoors during the summer.
Each week you are required to complete 20 hours of training and assessment, made up of 14 hours of weekly classroom training and 6 hours of structured study. An additional 10 hours per week of self-directed learning should be set aside for homework, totalling approximately 30 hours per week.
Upon completing the SIS40221 Certificate IV in Fitness, graduates can pursue roles such as Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, Gym Instructor, Fitness Consultant, and Exercise Specialist in settings such as fitness centres, gyms, aquatic facilities, community facilities and in open spaces.
