Common Questions
The course fee depends on your eligibility. It may be Fee-Free TAFE ($0) for eligible students under the government initiative, $2,280 for concession, $3,115 subsidised, or $5,885 as the full fee. An eligibility calculator is available to help determine which fee applies to you.
A mandatory minimum of 100 hours of placement must be completed at a Primary or Secondary School as either a volunteer or an employed teacher aide. Placement must occur for the full duration of study, beginning with your first enrolment. Students are expected to source a Primary or Secondary School suitable in their area, though support can be given upon request. All related paperwork needs to be submitted and processed before placement can commence.
The course is available on campus with some online study at multiple campuses including Bracken Ridge and Mt Gravatt (Greater Brisbane), Robina (Gold Coast), Nambour and Mooloolaba (Sunshine Coast), and Hervey Bay (Wide Bay Burnett). Study is primarily face to face with a teacher, with approximately 80% on campus and 20% online. Some training may also take place via video or Zoom.
Duration varies by campus: 9 months full time (2 days per week) at Bracken Ridge, Mt Gravatt, and Mooloolaba; and 1 year part time at Robina (up to 1.5 days per week), Nambour (1 day per week on campus plus a 2 hour compulsory Zoom session), and Hervey Bay (1 day per week on campus plus a 2 hour compulsory Zoom session).
Successful completion qualifies you to work as a teacher aide across various school settings. Specific job roles include Education Assistant, Education Support Officer, Education Aide, Teaching Assistant, Teacher Aide, School Learning Support Officer, School Services Officer, Integration Aide, Special Needs Teacher Aide, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Officer, Outside School Hours Care Assistant, and Paraprofessional Educator. The course also gives you the skills you need to undertake further studies in education.
