Practical Music electives
Individual instrumental/vocal tuition (45-minute lessons) plus practical and ensemble subjects from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.
Academic Music electives
Musicology, ethnomusicology, music history, non-western music, jazz & improvisation and composition subjects from the Conservatorium.
Level 1 Music electives
Cap of no more than 50 points (usually four subjects) at level 1.
Level 3 Music electives
At least 25 points (usually two subjects) must be taken at level 3.
Breadth cross-credit
Up to 50 points (usually four subjects) may be cross-credited as Breadth to the student's main Bachelor degree.

The Graduate Diploma in Music (Practical Music) is designed for university graduates in any field who wish to undertake graduate study in music, regardless of their undergraduate discipline.
By completing the Graduate Diploma in Music (Practical Music), you will develop your instrumental, vocal or conducting technique to a level equivalent of a fourth year of study, and establish a sophisticated awareness of the stylistic and interpretive characteristics of the repertory studies.
You can select from one of the largest ensemble programs in the country, with options ranging from large to small, western to non-Western, and early to new music ensembles.
The indicative first year fee for 2026 is AUD $25,984. Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) are not available for this course.
Yes, upon completion of the Graduate Diploma in Music you may be eligible to apply for masters by coursework or research in Music.
