Prepare patients for anaesthesia
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to complete specific patient related preparation tasks. It includes patient preparation and transfer, the attachment and detachment of equipment and positioning the patient for different procedures.
Monitor patients during anaesthesia
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to observe and monitor patients, taking a broad range of clinical tests and measurements.
Assist with airway management
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide assistance to the anaesthetist in airway management during anaesthesia and resuscitation, including difficult and emergency airways.
Respond to anaesthesia related emergencies
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise signs of patient deterioration that pose an immediate threat to life and respond appropriately, including the preparation of drugs used in emergency situations.
Maintain quality and supply of anaesthetic equipment and consumables
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to check functioning of equipment, implement routine and planned equipment maintenance, and maintain the supply of anaesthetic supplies. It also covers the evaluation of new equipment.
Assist with clinical procedures used in anaesthesia
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan and prepare for anaesthesia for a range of surgical specialities, and provide assistance to the anaesthetist during regional anaesthesia, invasive monitoring and other anaesthetic related procedures.
Monitor medications in the anaesthetic environment
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to access and prepare medications, fluids, blood and blood products prescribed by the anaesthetist, to monitor patient responses.
Use medical terminology in health care
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to apply an understanding of medical terminology to interpret clinical documentation and communicate with health care professionals.
Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to apply basic infection prevention and control principles in work settings including implementing standard and transmission-based precautions and responding to risks.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies. The unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Common Questions
You are required to complete 360 hours of vocational placement to satisfy this component of your qualification. There are 120 hours of placement per semester, starting from semester 2 and continuing in semesters 3 and 4. Vocational placement is conducted Monday–Friday between the hours of 6am and 9pm. You'll be required to work shifts determined by your placement provider, and these can include early mornings or late nights, any day of the week, including public holidays.
The course fees vary depending on your eligibility: Concession fee is $17,375 (for eligible students), Subsidised fee is $18,925 (for eligible government-funded students), Full fee is $24,040, and International student fee is $29,200. Payment options include a payment plan, upfront payment, and a VET Student Loan with a $19,290 cap (note: the Australian Government charges full fee-paying students a 20 per cent loan fee in addition to tuition fees).
TAFE Queensland has its own designated learning space with state-of-the-art anaesthetic machines, vital signs monitors, difficult intubation equipment, and simulator mannequins. The simulated clinical wards are also equipped with ECG machines and IV trolleys, which will prepare you for real-world situations while under the supervision of industry professionals.
Yes. To successfully satisfy all course requirements you will be required to apply for a Blue Card (Working with Children check). Prior to placement you may also need to complete a Criminal History Check (yellow card). Additionally, vaccinations may be required by the placement facility; it is recommended you are vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B, Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), Chickenpox, Pertussis (whooping cough), Influenza (annual vaccination), and COVID-19 (strongly recommended).
Yes. TAFE Queensland has a university pathway option for graduates who want to continue their studies. In many cases, completing one of TAFE Queensland's diplomas may give you a full year of credit towards a degree with one of their partner universities.
