Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating)

TVSA's AVI50519 Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating) is a CPL-entry upskilling program for pilots who already hold a Commercial Pilot Licence and want to add a Multi-Engine Instrument Rating to their logbook. Over 16 weeks at TVSA's Bacchus Marsh campus, students complete the Instrument Rating Examination (IREX) theory course, attain a Multi-Engine Aeroplane Class Rating (MEA), and gain a Multi-Engine Instrument Rating (MEIR) — developing the knowledge and skills to conduct flights in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) using flight instruments to control and navigate the aircraft, and to fly an approach and landing under an authorised Instrument Approach Procedure (IAP). The course includes 34 hours of flying time and 16 hours of simulator time, delivered through face-to-face training, practical in-flight training, flight simulation and briefings, with assessment via practical demonstrations, verbal Q&A, written exams and assignments. Tuition covers the flying and simulator hours, pre- and post-flight briefings, the IREX theory course, and first attempts at the IREX exam and MEA/MEIR flight tests, along with associated landing, air-services and CASA processing fees. Graduates are equipped for roles such as Airline Pilot and Multi-Engine Charter Pilot, with the qualification forming a recognised pathway toward a Bachelor of Aviation or a TVSA Flight Instructor rating.
