Diploma of Building and Construction (Building)

TAFE SA's Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) develops the skills needed to manage medium-rise construction projects in the residential and commercial sectors. The course suits people entering the commercial construction industry as well as those already working as builders, site managers or building supervisors who are seeking career advancement within their existing employment. Delivered part time at the Tonsley campus in a blended format combining classroom learning with online study, the course covers building practice, codes and structures, estimating and tendering, contract management, risk and financial management, and project planning, along with costing systems for medium-rise construction, energy efficiency and sustainability, quality control and managing client relationships. It may also suit licensed builders who want to upgrade their managerial and technical skills to move into medium-rise construction work. Entry requires completion of a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) Assessment. Government-subsidised training places are available, with fees charged per semester on a concession, subsidised or full-fee basis depending on the units enrolled; a full-fee place costs several times more than a subsidised place. On graduation, students are prepared for roles such as commercial construction manager, overseeing medium-rise residential and commercial building projects from planning through to completion. This qualification is offered to domestic students at TAFE SA and provides a recognised pathway for tradespeople and site supervisors moving into project and contract management.
