Diploma of Building and Construction (Building)

The Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) (CPC50220) reflects the role of building professionals who apply structural principles, risk and financial management, estimating, preparing and administering building and construction contracts, selecting contractors, overseeing work and quality, and managing construction work on residential (up to Class 1/10, 3 storeys) and commercial (Class 2-9, Type B/C construction) building projects. Occupational titles may include Builder, General Foreperson and Building Inspector. Training and assessment must be undertaken in a real or closely simulated workplace, and DIT works to secure live-site access for the core unit CPCCBC4008 (students already working in the industry are encouraged to use their existing workplace where it meets the unit's requirements). Builder licensing varies across states and territories, and requirements additional to this qualification may apply.

A total of 27 units (24 core and 3 electives) must be completed, covering business risk and WHS risk management, building codes and standards across construction classes, contract selection and administration, cost estimating, materials scheduling, site communication and supervision, legal requirements, structural principles, reading plans and tender documentation, site surveys, costing systems, contractor management, environmental management, construction business finances, and project quality and stakeholder engagement.

Delivered face-to-face (classroom based) over 52 weeks — 48 study weeks plus 4 weeks of holidays, 20 hours per week in the classroom plus an estimated 5 hours per week of self-study — at Darwin Institute of Trade (DIT, RTO 41128, CRICOS 03609J)'s Parramatta NSW and North Melbourne VIC campuses. Graduates may seek supervisory or managerial employment depending on industry experience, and may progress to higher education programs within the Building and Construction sector, subject to meeting entry requirements. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available to all students upon enrolment, and is particularly recommended for applicants who have worked in a relevant job role for at least 2 years.
