Common Questions
To enter the course, you must complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (LLN) and hold a Certificate IV in Building Design Drafting CPP40115, Certificate IV in Residential Building Drafting 52757WA, Certificate IV in Residential Drafting CPP40121, or demonstrated relevant vocational experience commensurate with the scope of work covered in the core units of CPP40121. If you have other relevant qualifications or industry experience, you can email your 9-digit reference number and details to admissions@tafesa.edu.au.
The total fees for the 18-month course vary depending on your eligibility: Fee Free TAFE places are $0, subsidised training costs $6,508 in total ($2,169 per semester), concession costs $4,666 in total ($1,555 per semester), and full fee is $25,665 in total ($8,555 per semester). Fee Free TAFE places are limited and eligibility criteria applies.
You are able to use the TAFE SA facilities and computer suites, or you may choose to buy relevant software such as: a SketchUp one (1) year Student Licence for approximately $93.50, Microsoft Project Student Licence (Cloud Base) at $14.00 per month, and a free Autodesk Student Licence is available on course registration for Revit and AutoCAD.
To complete the qualification, you are required to complete all 9 core units and 3 elective units. Students who successfully complete only one or more units of competency but not the full qualification are eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment.
Numerous career paths exist for building designers, including working for building design or architectural firms, consultancies, government departments, residential and commercial developers, or self-employment. Example job roles include Building Designer or Architectural Draftsperson.
