Business Communication
Provides students with an overview of the theories, models and practices that provide the foundation for understanding the ways to communicate in the contemporary workplace. It explores the characteristics of both effective and ineffective communication. Students will learn to explore and apply the language and communication skills needed for professional and academic reading, writing, research and presentation skills.
Introduction to Accounting
Provides students with an introduction to accounting and its role in providing information for both external and internal decision making. Students are introduced to key aspects of financial accounting such as financial statement preparation and analysis. Students are also exposed to management accounting concepts including budgeting, cost-volume-profit analysis and cost behaviour.
Economics
An introductory economics unit covering key microeconomic and macroeconomic principles such as demand and supply, market structure, GDP, inflation, unemployment and fiscal and monetary policy.
Commercial Law
Provides students with an understanding of the Australian legal system and an in-depth analysis of the legal regulation of businesses and business transactions. Topics include legal rights and duties applicable to business structures such as companies and partnerships, in addition to laws that regulate commerce/business including tort, contract, consumer protection and restrictive trade practices.
Skills for Numerical Analysis
Designed to give students the knowledge, skills, and confidence to apply mathematical and statistical concepts to their numerically based academic units, as well as to their future professional careers.
Introduction to Business Analytics
Introduces students to business analytics, emerging technologies and their application. Examines a broad range of business applications of analytics, including artificial intelligence, and introduces students to software such as Microsoft Excel.
Skills for Advanced Business English
Provides students with instructions and practice in advanced English grammar, vocabulary, and writing within a professional and contemporary business context.
Skills for Academic Success
Provides students with the contemporary core skills that are required to successfully learn in a tertiary education environment, including locating, analysing, and selecting research-based information.
Skills for Workplace Success
Prepares students to enter the workplace with a deeper understanding of workplace contexts, cultures, recruitment practices and expectations of professionals across a range of industries.
Quantitative Analysis
Provides students with an understanding of basic statistical methods used in the business environment. Specific skills include summarising and presenting data appropriately, testing hypotheses, using statistical notation, calculating probabilities, and forecasting using linear models.
The Hospitality and Tourism System
Introduces a wide variety of perspectives that help students understand how hospitality and tourism form part of an interconnected and balanced business system, examining social, economic, cultural, political, environmental, and ethical viewpoints.
Introduction to Management
Provides students with an understanding of a range of theoretical concepts that underpin the discipline of management across a variety of industries.
Organising People at Work
Provides an overview of the fundamentals of organizational behaviour and its relevance to contemporary business operations, examining organisational behaviour from the individual, team, and organisation perspectives.
Marketing Principles
Offers an overview and introduction into the field of marketing whilst positioning marketing in an organizational context. Develops a strong understanding of fundamental marketing concepts and practical tools employed by marketers.
Corporate Finance
Seeks to equip students with a fundamental understanding of the concepts and principles of corporate finance, emphasising theoretical knowledge and problem solving through the application of real-life scenarios and class discussions.
Common Questions
Upon successful completion of the Diploma of Business, you will receive an AQF Level 5 qualification and will receive 24 credit points towards the Bachelor of Business (079326C). You'll be guaranteed entry into the second year of a Bachelor of Business degree at Murdoch University.
The program fee is $27,400 for international students and $16,200 for domestic students.
You will need to complete 5 core units and 3 elective units (8 units total) in either two or three trimesters. Core units include Business Communication, Introduction to Accounting, Economics, Commercial Law, and Skills for Numerical Analysis. Elective units are chosen from options including Introduction to Business Analytics, Skills for Advanced Business English, Skills for Academic Success, Skills for Workplace Success, Quantitative Analysis, The Hospitality and Tourism System, Introduction to Management, Organising People at Work, Marketing Principles, and Corporate Finance.
You can start the diploma course in any trimester during the year, with intakes in February, June, and October. The course is delivered full-time for international students, and a part-time option is available for domestic students. The course runs for 3 trimesters of 15 weeks each.
If you are an international student, you must demonstrate English proficiency of IELTS 5.5 overall (each band 5.0 or above) or equivalent. You will also need to meet the academic entry requirements, including completion of Australian high school Year 12 with an ATAR of 50, or international equivalent.
