About This Course

The Diploma of Business is tailored to ensure relevance to contemporary work environments. The course facilitates the refinement of advanced cognitive abilities such as critical reading, writing, literacy, and oral communication within a business context. This enables the building of key business knowledge in the areas of accounting, human resource management, marketing and business administration, fostering both breadth and depth of knowledge while emphasising core values. The Diploma of Business is designed for those seeking to improve general business skills for current or future employment, as well being a pathway into the Bachelor of Business. Successful completion of the diploma will guarantee entry into the Avondale Bachelor of Business program with progression into the second year of study.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

Secondary education (Australia or New Zealand): A selection rank of at least 45 (ATAR plus any adjustment factors); OR a minimum of 24 points in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma; OR New Zealand Year 13 NCEA Level 3 results, identifying university entrance attainment; OR an appropriate score in the uniTEST and the Tertiary Online Written Assessment; OR an appropriate score in the Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)* OR the International Big Picture Learning Credential.
*Applicants must not be a current year 12 (or equivalent) student and must be 18 years or older at the time of commencing their course.
VET course (Australia or New Zealand): An Australian Certificate III; OR an equivalent New Zealand certificate, as approved by the Director, Student Administration Services.
Prior university study (Australia or New Zealand): Successfully completed at least 2 units of a Bachelor's degree; OR completed a bridging or enabling course, or another recognised tertiary preparation course; OR successfully completed at least three units of Avondale's Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation.
Overseas secondary or higher education: Refer to the Admission Policy (HE) for specific information regarding both the minimum academic entry standards (Appendix 1) and the English language proficiency requirements (Appendix 2).
Other work and life experience: If a Senior Secondary Certificate has not been completed, an eligible applicant may sit an admission test (uniTEST and TOWA or the Skills for Tertiary Admission Test). In exceptional circumstances, an applicant may be admitted based on equivalent qualifications or work and life experience as assessed by the Course Convenor or delegate and/or the DVC Academic.
English Language Requirements: Applicants whose primary language is not English must achieve an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with no sub-band less than 6.0, or one of the other ways outlined in Appendix 2 of the Admission Policy (HE).

Diploma of Business graduates will be prepared for many entry-level roles such as Assistant Accountant, Administrative Assistant, Customer Service Representative, or Sales Associate. With additional experience, advanced career opportunities can include Marketing Coordinator, Human Resources Specialist, Accountant, Finance Manager or Business Analyst. Graduates also develop skills for the following roles: Small business owner, Business manager, Office Manager, Team Leader, Program Coordinator, Retail Manager. Graduates can enter the Avondale Bachelor of Business program with credit for the eight completed units.

Yes. Successful completion of the Diploma of Business will guarantee entry into the Avondale Bachelor of Business program with progression into the second year of study, and graduates receive credit for the eight completed units.

How many units do I need to complete and what is the credit point requirement?

The Diploma of Business consists of eight units and requires 48 credit points for completion, with each unit having a 6 credit-point value.

Is the Diploma of Business available to international students?

Yes. This course is available to international students who meet the Australian government requirements for a student visa to reside in Australia for the duration of the course. It is also available online for international students residing outside Australia.

Can I study the Diploma of Business part-time?

Yes. The Diploma of Business is available on a full-time basis (1 year) or part-time (equivalent years), and can be studied on campus or off campus.
