Academic Skills for Success
Introduces students to academic skills required for academic studies. Develops academic communication and study skills including time management and organisational skills, digital skills, referencing, critical thinking, academic writing, research and investigation techniques and presentation skills.
Foundations of Information Technology
Introduces students to the field of information technology, providing theoretical knowledge and practical application of basic aspects of IT. Covers the internet, computer hardware, operating systems, software tools, networking and communication systems, database technology, and business information systems design and management.
Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism
Introduces students to the characteristics, relationships, dynamics and complexity of the tourism, hospitality, and event sectors. Explores concepts, stakeholders, nature and complexity of tourism, hospitality and events, and their interrelationships, including emerging trends and management issues.
Principles of Management and Organisations
Provides students with an understanding of principles of management applied across organisations. Covers theories of management, inquiry-based skills, leadership and management practices, diverse global workplace strategies, teams and teamwork, planning, organising, leading, motivating and rewarding.
Business Communication and Stakeholder Management
Provides students with the fundamentals of business communication, emphasising both theoretical knowledge and practical application. Covers internal and external communication strategies, using lectures, class discussions, self-assessments, videos, experiential learning, and group work.
Food and Beverage Management
Develops understanding of core principles and practices of food and beverage management. Covers restaurant operations, the management process, marketing, production and service, sanitation and safety, design, and current and future trends.
Marketing Foundations
Introduces marketing and locates the function of marketing within the organisational context. Covers micro and macro environmental analysis, ethics, the 4Ps, and provides a foundation for more specialised marketing units in year two and three.
Visitor Management
Explores tourist behaviour, motivations and decision-making and their impact on tourism product development and destination planning. Uses research and workshop activities focused on service quality, visitor experience, technology and interpretation to demonstrate practical application of service and experience design.

The Diploma of Business (Hospitality and Tourism Management) has intakes in February, March, May, June, August, September, October, and November. For 2026, Semester 1 Block 4 classes begin on 1 June 2026, with orientation on 27 May 2026.
To complete the Diploma, you need to pass 8 units worth a total of 80 credit points (10 credit points per unit). This consists of 5 core units (Academic Skills for Success, Foundations of Information Technology, Principles of Management and Organisations, Business Communication and Stakeholder Management, and Marketing Foundations) and 3 specialisation units in hospitality and tourism (Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism, Food and Beverage Management, and Visitor Management).
Full-time students will have approximately 8 hours of on-campus classes each week. In addition, students should set aside a minimum of 10–12 hours per week in their own time to complete assignments, readings, projects and prepare for quizzes and presentations.
Completion of the Diploma of Business (Hospitality and Tourism Management) provides advanced standing (credit transfer) into both the Associate Degree of Business (Hospitality and Tourism Management) and the Bachelor of Business (Hospitality and Tourism Management) at AIH.
