Course Content
Information Systems Applications in Business
Introduces the subject of information systems (IS) by presenting the most relevant concepts used to manage the integration of IS into business and society. Facilitates proficient ways to simplify the use of technology in complex IS business environments. Students develop both theoretical and practical understanding of business information systems and learn how organisations use IS to process data into information for critical decision-making.
Database Management System
Introduces students to the fundamentals of relational databases. Covers data modelling using entity relationship diagrams, structured query language (SQL), procedural language (PL), data analysis, sharing options, database systems security, distributed database management systems and data mining.
Software Development
Students learn the fundamentals of software development, including investigating client application software problems, evaluating approaches, and designing solutions using a programming language such as Python. Covers the lifecycle of a software development project including writing specifications, testing and design.
Systems Analysis Design
Covers the principles of analysis and design for information systems. Students learn techniques in data requirements gathering and analysis, data modelling at conceptual, logical and physical levels, functional dependencies, domain normalisation, and user-centred design approaches.
Project Management
Develops an in-depth understanding of information systems project management focusing on inputs, processes and outputs associated with project initiation, execution, monitoring and closure. Covers agile project management approaches and tools such as Microsoft Project, Trello and Monday.com.
Information Systems Security
Provides a comprehensive study of information systems security and an overview of professional, legal, and ethical issues faced by IS professionals. Students identify security threats, gauge risks, and develop risk management plans to mitigate various security threats and attacks on contemporary information systems.
Big Data and Visualisation
Introduces concepts of big data analytics and visualisation, including business motivations for big data adoption, enterprise technologies, big data business intelligence, algorithms and machine learning techniques, and data visualisation tools and techniques. Pre-requisite: MBIS4002 & MBIS4003.
Business Process Modelling
Facilitates students in examining and improving business operations using business process modelling software tools. Students analyse and design business processes in a variety of business contexts to solve complex business problems and improve organisational effectiveness and efficiency. Pre-requisite: MBIS4004 (Co-requisite).

To complete the Graduate Diploma of Business Information Systems, you must pass 8 units totalling 80 credit points (10 credit points per unit). This consists of 6 core units and 2 specialisation units, all at Level 4000 (AQF 8). There is also a nested exit qualification — the Graduate Certificate of Business Information Systems — which can be awarded after completing the first 3 core units (approximately 6 months full-time).

Yes. Completion of the Graduate Diploma of Business Information Systems provides direct entry and advanced standing into the Master of Business Information Systems at AIH.
