Information Systems Applications in Business
Provides an introduction to information systems (IS) by presenting the most relevant concepts used to manage the integration of IS into business and society. Facilitates proficient ways to simplify the use of technology in complex IS business environments. Students develop both theoretical and practical understanding of business information systems and the relationship between IS functionality and business process requirements.
Database Management System
Introduces students to the fundamentals of relational databases. Covers data modelling using entity relationship diagrams, structured query language (SQL), procedural language (PL), data analysis, database systems security, distributed database management systems and data mining.
Software Development
Students learn the fundamentals of software development, including investigating client application software problems, evaluating approaches, and designing solutions using a programming language such as Python. Covers the full software development lifecycle including writing specifications, testing and design.
Systems Analysis Design
Covers principles of analysis and design for information systems, including data requirements gathering and analysis, modelling of data at conceptual, logical, and physical levels, functional dependencies and domain normalisation, and user-centred design.
Big Data and Visualisation
Introduces concepts informing big data analytics and visualisation, enterprise technologies, big data business intelligence, algorithms and machine learning techniques for big data, and data visualisation tools and techniques. Pre-requisite: MBIS4002 & MBIS4003.
Business Process Modelling
Facilitates students in examining and improving business operations using business process modelling software tools. Develops knowledge and skills to analyse and design business processes in a variety of business contexts. Pre-requisite: MBIS4004 (Co-requisite).
Professional Practice in Information Systems
Educates students about the ethical, legal and social issues they are likely to meet as future information system (IS) professionals, including data and privacy, confidentiality, cybercrime and internet fraud. Develops negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
Discovering Data Analytics
Develops conceptual understanding of data analytics in real-world applications, including the lifecycle of a data science project (data collection, management, wrangling, analytics and visualisation), privacy, surveillance, security, and ethical/legal perspectives. Also prepares students for the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate. Pre-requisite: MBIS4002 Software Development & MBIS4003 Database Management System.
