Course Content
Information Systems Applications in Business
Introduces the subject of information systems (IS) by presenting the most relevant concepts used to manage the integration of IS into business and society. Facilitates proficient ways to simplify the use of technology in complex IS business environments. Students develop both theoretical and practical understanding of business information systems and how organisations use IS to process data into information for critical decision-making.
Database Management System
Introduces students to the fundamentals of relational databases. Covers data modelling using entity relationship diagrams, structured query language (SQL), procedural language (PL), data analysis, sharing options, database systems security concepts, distributed database management systems, and data mining.
Software Development
Students learn the fundamentals of software development, investigate client application software problems, evaluate approaches, and design solutions using a programming language such as Python. Covers the lifecycle of a software development project including writing specifications, testing and design.
Systems Analysis Design
Covers the principles of analysis and design for information systems. Students learn techniques in data requirements gathering and analysis along with methods to model data needs at the conceptual, logical, and physical levels. Addresses functional dependencies and domain normalisation using a user-centred design approach.
Information Systems Security
Provides a comprehensive study in the field of information systems security and an overview of professional, legal, and ethical issues faced by information system professionals. Students learn to identify security threats, gauge risks, and develop risk management plans to mitigate various security threats and attacks on contemporary information systems.
Business Process Modelling
Facilitates students in examining and improving business operations using business process modelling software tools. Students make informed recommendations aimed at solving complex business problems and improving organisational effectiveness and efficiency. Pre-requisite: MBIS4004 (Co-requisite).
Professional Practice in Information Systems
Educates students about the ethical, legal and social issues they are likely to meet as future information system professionals, including data and privacy, confidentiality, cybercrime and internet fraud. Students develop negotiation and conflict resolution skills in preparation for their future role as IS professionals.
Cybersecurity Risk Assessment and Strategies
Introduces students to the background of cyber security and cyber risk management. Covers risk management techniques for cybersecurity based on international standards including ISO 31000 and industry best practices. Topics include information security, cyber-risk management, cyber risk assessment (risk identification, analysis, evaluation and treatment), risk measurement, risk scales, uncertainty, high-consequence risk, and business continuity management.

To complete the Graduate Diploma of Business Information Systems (Cyber Security), you must pass 8 units totalling 80 credit points (10 credit points per unit). This consists of 6 core units and 2 specialisation units. The course is structured at AQF Level 8 (Level 4000). There is also a nested exit qualification — the Graduate Certificate of Business Information Systems — which can be achieved after completing the first 3 core units (approximately 6 months full-time).
