Academic Skills for Success
Introduces students to academic skills required for academic studies. Develops academic communication and study skills including time management and organisational skills, digital skills, referencing, critical thinking, academic writing, research and investigation techniques and presentation skills.
Foundations of Information Technology
Introduces students to the field of information technology, providing both theoretical knowledge and practical application of basic aspects of IT and their relevance to 21st century business operations. Covers the Internet, computer hardware, operating systems, software tools, networking and communication systems, database technology, and current issues and trends in IT.
Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism
Introduces students to the characteristics, relationships, dynamics and complexity of the tourism, hospitality, and event sectors. Explores concepts, stakeholders, nature and complexity of tourism, hospitality and events, and their interrelationships. Students research emerging trends and management issues relating to a changing visitor profile and the experience economy.
Principles of Management and Organisations
Provides students with an understanding of principles of management applied across organisations. Covers theories of management, inquiry-based skills, leadership and management practices, strategies of working in a diverse global workplace, teams and teamwork, planning, organising, leading, motivating and rewarding, and management strategies in personal and professional contexts.
Business Communication and Stakeholder Management
Provides students with the fundamentals of business communication, emphasising both theoretical knowledge and practical application. Helps students analyse, select, and apply appropriate strategies in internal and external communication contexts within and outside the organisation.
Food and Beverage Management
Develops understanding of the core principles and practices of food and beverage management. Provides an overview of effective and successful operational management within food and beverage managerial environments, covering restaurant operations, the management process, marketing, production and service, sanitation and safety, design, and current and future trends.
Marketing Foundations
Offers an introduction to marketing and locates the function of marketing within the organisational context and career. Covers core marketing topics including micro and macro environmental analysis, ethics, the 4Ps, and provides a foundation for more specialised marketing units in subsequent years.
Visitor Management
Explores how tourist behaviour is shaped and influenced by internal and external forces. Students examine theories related to tourist motivation and decision-making, and their impact on tourism product development, destination planning and management. Focuses on service quality, visitor experience, technology and the role of interpretation in visitor management.

The course has intakes in February, March, May, June, August, September, October, and November each year. For 2026 Semester 1 Block 4, orientation is on 27 May 2026 and classes start on 1 June 2026.
You need to pass 8 units totalling 80 credit points (10 credit points per unit). This consists of 5 core units (Academic Skills for Success, Marketing Foundations, Business Communication and Stakeholder Management, Principles of Management and Organisations, and Foundations of Information Technology) and 3 specialisation units (Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism, Food and Beverage Management, and Visitor Management).
Completion of the Diploma of Business (Hospitality and Tourism Management) provides advanced standing into the Associate Degree of Business (Hospitality and Tourism Management) and the Bachelor of Business (Hospitality and Tourism Management) at AIH.
The course is delivered on-campus at AIH's Sydney campus (Level 3 & 4, 545 Kent Street, NSW 2000) and Melbourne campus (Level 1, 20 Queen Street, VIC 3000). Full-time students have approximately 8 hours of on-campus classes per week, plus a minimum of 10–12 hours per week for independent study including assignments, readings, projects, and preparation for quizzes and presentations.
