Course Content
Information Systems Applications in Business
Provides an introduction to information systems (IS) by presenting the most relevant concepts used to manage the integration of IS into business and society. Facilitates proficient ways to simplify the use of technology in complex IS business environments using case studies and industry examples to develop theoretical and practical understanding.
Database Management System
Introduces students to the fundamentals of relational databases. Covers data modelling using entity relationship diagrams, structured query language (SQL), procedural language (PL), data analysis, sharing options, database systems security, distributed database management systems, and data mining.
Software Development
Students learn the fundamentals of software development, including investigating a client's application software problems, evaluating approaches, and designing solutions using a programming language such as Python. Covers the full lifecycle of a software development project including writing specifications, testing and design.
Systems Analysis Design
Covers the principles of analysis and design for information systems including data requirements gathering and analysis, modelling at conceptual, logical, and physical levels, functional dependencies, and domain normalisation using a user-centred design approach.
Project Management
Develops in-depth understanding of information systems project management covering project initiation, execution, monitoring and closure. Focuses on agile project management approaches and tools such as Microsoft Project, Trello and Monday.com.
Information Systems Security
Provides a comprehensive study of information systems security including professional, legal, and ethical issues. Students learn to identify security threats, gauge risks, and develop risk management plans to mitigate various security threats and attacks on contemporary information systems.
Big Data and Visualisation
Introduces concepts of big data analytics and visualisation, enterprise technologies, big data business intelligence, machine learning techniques for big data, and data visualisation tools and techniques. Pre-requisite: MBIS4002 & MBIS4003.
Business Process Modelling
Facilitates students in examining and improving business operations using business process modelling software tools. Students develop knowledge and skills to analyse and design business processes in a variety of business contexts. Pre-requisite: MBIS4004 (Co-requisite).

The total course tuition fee is $20,400 for 2024 and $21,440 for 2026, payable over 1 year. The fee per unit is $2,550 (2024) or $2,680 (2026). Each unit is worth 10 credit points, and 80 total credit points are required for the award (8 units). All fees are in Australian dollars, subject to change without notice, and must be paid in full before enrolment/selection of subjects in any given semester.
To complete the Graduate Diploma of Business Information Systems, students must pass 8 units comprising 6 core units and 2 specialisation units, totalling 80 credit points (10 credit points per unit). There is also a nested exit qualification — the Graduate Certificate of Business Information Systems — which can be awarded after the first 3 units (approximately 6 months full-time study).
The course has multiple intake dates throughout the year: February, March, May, June, August, September, October, and November. For 2026, Semester 1 Block 4 has an orientation on 27 May 2026 with classes starting 1 June 2026.
The Graduate Diploma of Business Information Systems is offered at AIH's Sydney campus (Level 3 & 4, 545 Kent Street, NSW 2000) and Melbourne campus (Level 1, 20 Queen Street, VIC 3000). It is available to both domestic and international students. The CRICOS Code for this course is 105295G.
Graduates can pursue careers as a Database Administrator, Business-IT Strategy Consultant, or Software Developer. Completion of the Graduate Diploma of Business Information Systems also provides direct entry and advanced standing into the Master of Business Information Systems at AIH.
Assessment at AIH is practically and professionally focused, and may include individual and team-based projects, case studies and presentations, essays, assignments and reports, exams, practical assessments, discussion forums, and participation in class including formative assessment activities. Students studying full-time should expect 12 hours of on-campus classes per week plus approximately 7–9 hours per unit per week for self-directed study.
