Diploma of Civil Construction Design

The Diploma of Civil Construction Design (RII50520) at TasTAFE builds on the engineering drafting skills gained in the Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting to train students to become civil engineering design technicians. During the course students work on real-world projects that reflect the role of a civil engineering design technician in industry, supported by project management units covering best-practice techniques in managing project time and quality that students can later apply in industry. The course covers structural engineering analysis methodologies to underpin students' understanding of the structural principles behind the projects they design and document, including calculating force systems within simple beam structures, calculating stresses in simple structures and applying technical mathematics. Students also learn 3D building design modelling and collaborative BIM workflows, and complete detailed design units covering foundations, rural and urban roads, sub-divisions, open car parks, surface and subsurface drainage, and civil concrete structures.

The Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting is an entry requirement to begin this course. Domestically it is delivered part-time through mixed learning online and at the Clarence campus, with tuition of $19,290 for both subsidised and commercial students. International students study for 52 weeks in Hobart at 20 hours per week with a February intake, at AUD $14,495. All units in the qualification are elective units, all of which must be completed. Graduates are prepared for roles as a Civil Engineering Design Technician or Engineering Drafting Technician in civil and structural practice.
