Diploma of Civil Construction Design

This qualification reflects the role of individuals working as designers or design paraprofessionals who support professional engineers. They perform tasks involving a high level of autonomy and requiring the application of significant judgement in planning and determining the selection of equipment/roles/techniques for themselves and others. They are required to develop site specific work designs to ensure the implementation of the client's site requirements. They demonstrate the application of a broad range of technical, managerial, coordination and planning skills. The twenty units of competency pair design practice with the technical fundamentals behind it: preparing detailed designs of foundations, flexible pavements, surface drainage, landscaping and civil concrete, timber, masonry, crib and gabion structures, supported by technical mathematics, calculating stresses in simple structures, producing basic engineering drawings, operating CAD systems and capturing new spatial data, alongside program risk, project time, quality and procurement management and applying safe design principles to control WHS risks. The course is delivered over 78 weeks at York Business Institute's Sydney campus, combining face-to-face classes with online study at 20 hours per week. Graduates are prepared for work as civil engineering designers and civil engineering draftspersons. After achieving this qualification candidates may undertake Advanced Diploma or further higher education (Bachelor degree).
