Diploma of Civil Construction Design

The RII50520 Diploma of Civil Construction Design at Victorian College of Education Australia (VCEA) reflects the role of individuals working as designers or design paraprofessionals who support professional engineers. Graduates perform tasks involving a high level of autonomy and requiring the application of significant judgement in planning and determining the selection of equipment, roles and techniques for themselves and others. They are required to develop site-specific work designs to ensure the implementation of the client's site requirements, and they demonstrate a broad range of technical, managerial, coordination and planning skills. The qualification requires 20 units, all electives, covering technical mathematics, mathematical techniques in a manufacturing engineering environment, engineering mechanics principles, calculating force systems within simple beam structures and stresses in simple structures, processing and interpreting data, applying data and reporting results, CAD systems for basic drawing elements and 3D models, building information modelling, and detailed design of foundations, landscaping, open car parks, pavement surfacing and traffic signals.

Delivery is face to face in the classroom at VCEA's Queen Street campus in Melbourne, with assessment through classroom activity, projects, case studies and assignments. The course runs for 60 weeks full time including holidays and orientation. Tuition is $30,000, plus a non-refundable enrolment fee of $450 and a materials fee of $2,000. Individuals may enter with one year of vocational experience providing design support for professional engineers, or having completed the RII40820 Certificate IV in Civil Construction Design. After achieving the qualification, graduates could progress to the RII60520 Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design or other Advanced Diploma courses within the RII training package.
