Course Overview

About This Course

The course is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate commerce degree and will facilitate articulation into the second year of an undergraduate program offered by the Macquarie University Business School. Students will be introduced to fundamental knowledge and concepts in business, such as accounting, finance, marketing, economics, statistics and management.

The Diploma of Commerce is a diploma consisting of a minimum of 80 credit points, taught in English, which normally takes 28 weeks of full-time study or part-time equivalent to complete. The course structure requires successful completion of eight units of study. Most students are admitted on the basis of successful completion of secondary studies or by alternative pathways for non-current school leavers. Graduates of the diploma program are eligible to progress to a range of bachelor degrees.

On successful completion you will be able to:

Demonstrate academic integrity and apply teamwork knowledge and skills for effective collaboration and engagement.
Acquire and use fundamental technical skills and tools, and appropriate techniques to analyse data to solve a diverse range of business problems.
Demonstrate oral and written communication skills through teamwork and a range of activities, such as presentations, report writing, active engagement and other assessment tasks.
Acquire and demonstrate fundamental key concepts and principles in the area of commerce such as accounting, finance, management, economics, marketing, and statistics.

General Requirements

Domestic students:

Selection rank (ATAR) of 60, or an approved equivalent
Year 12 (or equivalent) qualification with a minimum Selection Rank of 60
or
HSC (or interstate) board exam with minimum average mark* of 60.
International students must be at least 17 years of age at the time of commencement and have a qualification equivalent to Australian Year 12 with an ATAR of 60.
*Other factors including ATAR and other attempted studies are taken into consideration with the average mark. Achieving the average mark does not guarantee an offer. Only relevant State Board approved academic subjects are included when reviewing your average. For instance, in the New South Wales HSC, only results from Board Developed courses are considered.

International students:

What HSC English subjects are accepted for entry into the Diploma of Commerce?

Accepted HSC English subjects include English Standard, English as an Additional Language or Dialect, and English Advanced (all requiring a minimum Band B3), as well as English Extension 1 and English Extension 2 (both requiring a minimum Band E2).

What mathematics subjects are required for academic entry into the Diploma of Commerce?

For academic entry, you must have completed one of the following HSC Mathematics subjects: Mathematics Standard 2 or Mathematics Advanced (minimum Band B3), or Mathematics Extension 1 or Mathematics Extension 2 (minimum Band E2).

Is an additional HSC subject required beyond English and Mathematics for entry?

Yes, in addition to the English and Mathematics requirements, applicants must also have achieved a minimum Band B3 in any other Category A HSC subject, or a minimum Band E2 in any other Extension subject not already listed in the English or Mathematics requirements.

What is the minimum band required for most HSC subjects to gain academic entry?

For most Category A HSC subjects, the minimum required band is B3. For Extension subjects, the minimum required band is E2.
