About This Course

The Diploma of Commerce is unlike any other one-year Diploma. It covers the fundamentals of business disciplines at an undergraduate level. Through your studies in this diploma, you will explore key business subject areas, including accounting, management, information systems, business law, and marketing. You will connect with high profile brands and get real-world work experience through industry placements, client projects, guest speakers, seminars and events in a friendly and social environment, led by industry-experienced teaching staff.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

You must have successfully completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) (or equivalent)
VCE units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in English other than EAL; or a study score of at least 23 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or equivalent studies
Applicants with Higher Education study must have satisfactorily completed at least two courses (subjects) (0.25 EFTSL) at an Australian undergraduate level (or overseas equivalent)
Applicants with Vocational Education and Training study: Successful completion of an approved pathway qualification guarantees entry into this qualification; otherwise you must have successfully completed the VCE or equivalent and meet the stated prerequisites
Applicants with Work and Life Experience must have successfully completed the VCE (or equivalent qualification) and meet the stated prerequisites; you may satisfy the academic requirements by completing the STAT multiple choice
Adjustment factors available include: School Network Access Program (SNAP), regional adjustments, equity access schemes, Elite Athlete and Performer Program, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (Indigenous Access Program)

How does the Diploma of Commerce compare to the first year of a Bachelor degree?

The Diploma of Commerce is a full year of study equivalent to the first year of Bachelor of Business, and offers unique academic and industry learning experiences designed to inspire. Whilst this qualification matches the academic standards of the first year of a bachelor degree, it is taught in smaller groups of typically 25-30 students where you will combine knowledge and experience in a fun, challenging yet rewarding program.

Can I progress to a Bachelor degree after completing the Diploma of Commerce?

Yes. The Diploma of Commerce provides credit and guaranteed entry into further study. If you'd like to pursue further study after completion of this course, you can continue your studies in the Bachelor of Business. There are also Guaranteed Pathway packages available, including Commerce (Diploma)/Business (Degree), Commerce (Diploma)/Accounting (Degree), and Commerce (Diploma)/Accounting/Business (Double degree).

What kind of industry experience will I gain during the diploma?

Throughout your study, you will engage in work-integrated-learning (WIL) projects undertaken with RMIT partners to allow firsthand industry experience. These projects form a portfolio of work demonstrating to prospective employers the practical business experience gained throughout your study. You will also have access to the RMIT Trading Facility, which provides a live market data feed from Thomson Reuters, as well as financial analysis tools used by professionals at the world's leading banks and investment firms.

What are the fees for the Diploma of Commerce in 2026?

For domestic students in a Commonwealth Supported Place, the annual student contribution amount for a standard year of full-time study is between AU$4,738 to AU$17,399, depending on the band of each subject. For international students, the total fee is AU$36,480 (2026 total). An additional Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) of up to AU$373 maximum applies for 2026. Eligible domestic students may defer payment through HECS-HELP.

How are students assessed throughout the Diploma of Commerce?

Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral presentations, group projects, research projects and practical assignments. As part of the diploma, you will also have the chance to apply and refine a range of professional skills in a workplace or in a simulated business environment, demonstrating your professional or vocational skills and interacting with industry and the community.
