Accounting
A compulsory core unit. Students understand the role of the accountant in society and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of accounting principles and how managerial, investment and financial issues are applied in a business environment.
Economics
A compulsory core unit. Students develop an understanding of how society attempts to overcome the problem of scarcity, covering key principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics, and examining current economic issues.
Marketing
A compulsory core unit. Students develop an understanding of foundational marketing principles including market segmentation, consumer behaviour, and marketing mix strategies.
Management
A compulsory core unit. Students develop an understanding of the evolution of management theories and practices over time, and the factors which impact employee motivation and productivity.
Business Information Systems
A compulsory core unit (Curtin Stream). Students examine the integration of technology with business processes, including database management, ERP systems, cybersecurity, and strategic information management.
Business Law
A compulsory core unit (Curtin Stream) / elective (Curtin Stream). Focuses on business contracts and civil cases concerning breaches of contract, and examines the basic structure of Australian federal and state parliaments and different business structures.
Accounting (Managerial)
An elective. Introduces students to advanced knowledge and skills in managerial accounting, including analytical and technical skills to prepare, analyse and apply management data.
Consumer Behaviour
An elective. Students study psychological and sociological factors influencing consumer decision-making processes, including motivation, perception, attitudes, and cultural influences.
Introduction to Finance
An elective. Introduces students to basic concepts of corporate and investment finance, equipping them with fundamentals of financial theory and financial tools for decision making in corporations.
Common Questions
Students successfully completing the Diploma of Commerce Curtin Stream can progress into Year 2 of a Bachelor of Commerce at Curtin University. Students can also progress into Year 2 of Murdoch University's Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Commerce, as well as the University of Notre Dame Australia's Bachelor of Commerce.
Students in the Curtin Stream complete six compulsory subjects: Accounting, Business Information Systems, Business Law, Economics, Marketing and Management. They then choose two other units depending on their major.
The Diploma of Commerce is a one-year program with intakes in February and July. Each intake completes two semesters, with 720 hours in total at 20 hours per week.
