Communication Skills
Introduces the foundations of academic writing – from library research using databases, selection of approved academic resources, to writing paragraphs and essays, using the APA referencing system and delivering oral presentations using multi-media. Also includes essential study skills to assist with time management, note-taking and the use of memory aids for study purposes.
Introductory Computing
Develops knowledge and skills in computing systems – software, hardware, digital security, communication networks, internet, information and data management. Students develop digital literacy and gain practical skills in specific computing applications from the Microsoft Office Suite, and are introduced to basic hands-on skills in program design using Pseudocode.
Introductory Mathematics
Designed for students who require a general mathematics background suitable for studies in business, health sciences and computing/IT courses. Students learn to use a scientific calculator and develop critical thinking skills to identify, analyse, synthesize and solve mathematical calculations.
Workplace Communication – Employability
Students identify, analyse and apply communication, social and intercultural skills for effective interpersonal and workplace relationships. Develops written skills, oral presentation skills and research skills, and makes connections between learning and future employability through topics such as effective workplace relationships, negotiation, managing conflict, and skills for teamwork and leadership.
Project Management
Introduces concepts and skills used by managers to propose, plan, secure resources, budget and lead project teams to successful project completion. Students examine and apply fundamental principles, strategies and approaches for project management in a variety of contexts.
Intercultural Studies
Introduces students to intercultural interaction in the contemporary world, focusing on multiple and diverse audiences, modalities, globalisation, cultural symbols and values, language, and interpretations of intercultural sites. Global citizenship and intercultural communication skills are introduced and enhanced.
Information Design
Introduces fundamentals of information design and how best to present information using graphics, colour and layout. Students investigate principles and elements of visual communication and learn to apply them in practical workshops, including a range of information products and desktop publishing.
Introductory Marketing
Explains theoretical principles/practices for marketing in changing environments. Introduces fundamental marketing concepts across many institutions and how marketing concepts are applied in the real world. Students identify, analyse and combine key marketing tools to develop a marketing mix for specific markets.
Design Thinking
A people-centred approach that empowers individuals, teams and organisations to tackle complex challenges with innovative outcomes. Engages students with Design Thinking principles, processes, methods, and mindset to question and reframe the nature of problems at hand while iterating and testing possibilities with an empathetic approach.
Communication Campaigns
Introduces students to the development and execution of communication campaigns with a focus on public relations techniques and processes. Students develop critical appraisal and creativity skills to sharpen their understanding of communication campaigns using case studies and current day situations as reference.
Common Questions
Students who complete the ECC Diploma of Communications and Creative Industries (Year 2) will receive up to 8 units (120 credit points) advanced standing, the equivalent of the first year, in the respective bachelor's degree at ECU. A minimum of 50% pass in all units is required for progression to ECU.
For 2026, international student fees are A$27,300 for Year 1 and A$31,900 for Year 2. Domestic student fees are A$17,700 for Year 1 and A$18,000 for Year 2. FEE-HELP is available for eligible domestic students.
The course has three intake dates per year for both Year 1 and Year 2: February, June, and October.
The Diploma of Communications & Creative Industries can lead into the second year of numerous ECU bachelor's degrees, including Bachelor of Arts (majoring in English, History, Human Behaviour, Media and Cultural Studies, Politics and International Relations, or Sociology), Bachelor of Communication, Bachelor of Counselling, Bachelor of Creative Writing, Bachelor of Design, Bachelor of Journalism and Broadcast Media, Bachelor of Marketing Advertising and Public Relations, Bachelor of Screen Production, Bachelor of Visual Arts, and more.
Each year of the diploma consists of 8 units of study and can be completed over 2 or 3 trimesters. In Year 1, students study 5 core units (COM210, CPT107, MTH104, COM220, PMG100) plus 3 electives chosen from units such as ICS100, CPT100, and BUS129. Year 2 consists of 8 units focused on both theoretical and practical dimensions of communications and creativity.
