About This Course

The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care reflects the role of early childhood educators who are responsible for designing and implementing curriculum in early childhood education and care services. They may have responsibility for supervision of volunteers or other staff. Under the National Quality Framework, 50% of educators required to meet the relevant ratios in a centre based service working with children preschool age and under, must have or be actively working towards an approved Diploma level education and care qualification. All other educators required to meet the relevant ratios at the service must have or be actively working towards an approved Certificate III level education and care qualification. The course will cover subjects in: Providing care for babies, toddlers and children; Health and safety in the workplace and of children; First Aid; Designing and implementing the curriculum to foster children's learning and development; Embed sustainable practices in service operations. After successfully completing the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care course, students will be equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to work to implement an approved learning framework within the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations and the National Quality Standard.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

Minimum 18 years of age.
Successful completion of Year 12 (High School Certificate (HSC) OR equivalent) OR a Certificate III OR equivalent OR be a mature age.
Completion of CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.
Students must undertake a National Police Check and a Working with Children Check prior to commencing their work placement.

International Students — English Requirements (one of the following):

IELTS: minimum score of 5.5 in the Academic section and no band less than 5.0 for the other sections.
TOEFL Internet-Based Test: scored 51–66.
Pearson Test of English (PTE): scored 45 or higher.
Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) ESOL test: score 162 or higher.
OET: minimum C Grade.
Duolingo English Test: minimum score 95–100.
CEFR Levels / Oxford Test: minimum level B2.
CELPIP General: score of 6.
LANGUAGECERT Academic: minimum score of 60.
Michigan English Test: minimum score of 49.
Evidence that English is the medium of instruction at the student's school for the last two (2) years with a satisfactory grade.
If the student does not have current proof of one of the above, they will be required to take an English Placement Test administered by Skills Australia Institute (SAI).

Australian Permanent Residents — English Requirements:

Students need to demonstrate that they have a proficiency in English and a basic understanding of Maths.
For students who cannot supply documented proof, they will be required to sit a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Test prior to a place being offered in the course.

Note:

Mature students who do not meet the admission requirements listed above may be allowed entrance on the basis of their work experience.

How many units do I need to complete to finish the CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care?

To successfully complete the CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, students must complete 15 units comprising of 12 core units and three (3) elective units.

Does this course include work placement, and how many hours are required?

Yes, this course includes 480 hours of work-based training which will be completed over a period of 20 weeks. During work-based training, students will be able to practice their skills and knowledge in a workplace setting, which will assist students to be job-ready after successfully completing the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.

What are the prerequisites for enrolling in the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care?

All students must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have successfully completed Year 12 (or equivalent) or a Certificate III or be of mature age. In addition, completion of CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care is required. Students must also undertake a National Police Check and a Working with Children Check prior to commencing their work placement.

What further study options are available after completing this diploma?

Successful completion of the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care will lay a foundation for successful students to progress into: BSB61015 Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management, Bachelor in Early Childhood Education, or Bachelor of Social Science (children and family studies). Note that study pathways may include qualifications or courses that may not be offered at Skills Australia Institute.

How is assessment conducted in this course?

The Assessment Process is based on the principles of competency based training. Assessment for each unit of competency will be through a combination of classroom based and work placement tasks. Classroom based assessments include but are not limited to: Classroom Exercises, Assignments, Practical Demonstrations, Group Activities, Projects, and Verbal and/or Written Questions. Students may be assessed by a combination of continuous assessments and examinations, which may be based on competencies and marks or a combination of both.
