Diploma of Hospitality Management

The Diploma of Hospitality Management (SIT50422) is a nationally recognised vocational qualification offered by The Canberra Training School Pty. Ltd., trading as Canberra Business and Technology College (CBTC). It reflects the role of highly skilled senior operators who use a broad range of hospitality skills combined with managerial skills and sound industry knowledge to coordinate hospitality operations, operating independently with responsibility for others and a range of operational business decisions.

Training is delivered in a blended mode combining scheduled face-to-face classroom learning with online learning activities, and includes a mandatory work placement of a minimum 100 hours in a hospitality setting such as a restaurant, hotel or club. Learners are recommended to commit a minimum of 35–45 hours per week to class participation, homework, self-study, work placement, assignment activities and assessments across the 52-week course.

The qualification covers 28 units of competency (11 core and 17 elective), spanning customer service, budgeting, legal compliance, rostering, leading people and managing business relationships, plus elective food and beverage skills. It provides a pathway to work as a departmental or small business manager across restaurants, hotels, motels, catering operations, clubs, pubs, cafés and coffee shops, with scope to multi-skill in accommodation services, cookery, food and beverage, and gaming.
