Diploma of Hospitality Management

The Diploma of Hospitality Management (SIT50422) reflects the role of highly skilled senior managers who combine a broad range of hospitality skills with specialised managerial skills and substantial industry knowledge to coordinate hospitality operations. Graduates operate with significant autonomy and are responsible for strategic business management decisions, with the qualification allowing multiskilling and acquisition of targeted skills in accommodation services, cookery, food and beverage and gaming. It provides a pathway to work as a departmental or business manager across restaurants, hotels, motels, catering operations, clubs, pubs, cafés and coffee shops. No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

A total of 28 units (11 core and 17 electives) must be completed, covering conflict management, budgeting and financial monitoring, operations monitoring, business relationships, work health and safety, rostering and people leadership, customer service, legal risk and compliance, and quality customer service practices, alongside cookery electives spanning food preparation, appetisers, stocks and sauces, dietary requirements and buffet service.

Delivered face-to-face (classroom based) over 104 weeks — 88 study weeks plus 16 weeks of holidays, 20 hours per week in the classroom plus an estimated 5 hours per week of self-study, including a 240-hour work placement coordinated under DIT's Work Placement Policy — at Darwin Institute of Trade (DIT, RTO 41128, CRICOS 03609J)'s Parramatta NSW and North Melbourne VIC classroom campuses, with practical kitchen training at Alexandria NSW and Wayville SA. Graduates may progress to SIT60322 Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management, SIT60222 Advanced Diploma of Event Management, or another Advanced Diploma-level qualification within the SIT Training Package. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available to all students upon enrolment, and is particularly recommended for applicants who have worked in a relevant job role for at least 2 years.
