As a laboratory technician, you’ll be able to conduct tests for pathologists, biochemists, clinical chemists, pharmacologists, veterinarians, microbiologists and bacteriologists. You’ll also be able to apply your knowledge of living systems to work toward solving important issues, such as controlling disease and making the environment safer. You will provide technical support to scientists working in research, production and testing roles. Under supervision, you’ll get to examine changes in cells and tissues, perform chemical analyses of blood and other body fluids, and assist with research. With this qualification, you’ll be able to work in hospitals, research institutes, pharmaceutical companies, private pathology laboratories, commercial laboratories and government departments. <div

class="m-0 section-title__container anchorname" id="career"> Career As a graduate of this course, you’ll be qualified to work as a technician in pathology and research laboratories, providing services and support for diagnostic screening, medical research, vaccine production, agriculture, commercial plant propagation, microbiology, and more. The course has strong links with industry (including private pathology laboratories, hospital pathology laboratories research and testing laboratories) through the student work placement, regular student/staff visits to laboratories and the Industry Advisory Committee (IAC). Laboratories actively recruit RMIT student graduates. Yes, as part of the Diploma of Laboratory Technology program at RMIT, you will undertake a laboratory placement. During this placement, you will be expected to carry out tasks such as sample testing, microbiology procedures, equipment operation, recording laboratory results, and communicating with laboratory staff and other users.
During laboratory placement, you will be expected to perform tasks including reading and understanding safety data sheets and protocols, recording laboratory results in a log book, performing accurate calculations for solution making and dilutions, conducting bacterial counts, using equipment such as balances, spectrophotometers and micropipettes, and maintaining concentration and physical performance over an eight-hour shift.
RMIT offers a range of adjustments through its Equitable Learning Services (ELS) to support students with disabilities or conditions. Adjustments may include additional time allowances, assistive technology, rest breaks, and consideration of placement type and location. You are encouraged to contact the ELS prior to commencing your laboratory placement to discuss what adjustments may be helpful to you, and to consult with the Placement Coordinator for placement-specific considerations.
No, the functional requirements described — including verbal communication, vision, gross and fine motor skills, numeracy, and mental wellness — are not entry requirements for the Diploma of Laboratory Technology. They are provided as examples of the types of tasks you will be expected to carry out during laboratory placement and on-campus learning activities, so that students can make informed decisions about their study.
RMIT provides several support services for students living with mental health conditions, including the Equitable Learning Services and Counselling and Psychological Services. Students may be supported to take time off from their studies if they become unwell or experience difficulties with behavioural stability, and may resume when ready.
