About This Course

The Diploma of Community Services (CHC52021) at MCIE takes one year. The course covers case management, sociological factors in community work, workplace debriefing and support, legal and ethical practice, community development, family violence and complex needs, and professional reflection. None of this is abstract. Every unit was built around situations that community services workers run into regularly, and the assessments — which include written tasks, case studies, role plays, group work, and placement journals — are designed to test whether you can actually apply what you have learned, not just describe it.

How does work placement work, and do I have to find it myself?

You complete 160 mandatory hours at an approved community services organisation. MCIE's Work Placement Coordinator organises the placement for you, so you are not left scrambling to figure that part out on your own.

What kinds of jobs can I go into after graduating?

After completing the Diploma of Community Services, you can pursue roles such as case worker or case manager, team leader, service coordinator, welfare support worker, and senior roles in home and community care or residential services, across government agencies, NGOs, and community organisations.

Is the Diploma of Community Services recognised across Australia?

How is the Diploma of Community Services different from a Certificate III or IV?

A Certificate III or IV trains you to deliver support and care directly to clients. The Diploma trains you to plan, coordinate, and lead — taking responsibility for how a service operates rather than just your individual work within it.
