This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol, including a willingness to have an interview with teaching staff to discuss your experience and arrange an individual learning plan. It is recommended that you hold a Diploma of Marine Engineering (Engineer Watchkeeper) or equivalent, have an intermediate level of fitness and the ability to swim 5 metres and stay afloat for 5 minutes, a resistance to acute ocean sickness, and the ability to provide your own work clothes including overalls, protective eyewear, closed work shoes and sun protection for practical sessions.
The Advanced Diploma of Marine Engineering (Class 1) (Engineer Class 1 - Motor) requires you to successfully complete 14 units of competency, including 13 core units and 1 specialty unit. The course is delivered full time over 8 months at Newcastle, Tighes Hill campus.
Through a mixture of theory and practical coursework, you will learn to train to work safely on ship power systems exceeding 1,000 volts, find faults on live 440V marine electrical boards and understand high voltage safety, and review and assess marine control systems, automation and electrical systems. You will also gain experience leading a marine team, exposure to simulated emergency and survival situations, and high-level maritime engineering skills.
Yes, the recommended study pathway into this course is the Diploma of Marine Engineering (Engineer Watchkeeper). TAFE NSW also offers recognition of prior learning and credit transfer for previous study and work experience, which may allow you to complete your qualification faster.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
