About This Course

Further develops the dancer, with increased emphasis on dance, performance and choreographic skills. Graduates may find employment opportunities in dance teaching, choreography, and dance, singing & acting roles. Dance production, choreography, and dance teaching are emphasised to broaden the professional careers prospects of graduates. At Dance Factory we encourage you to develop a love of dance and musical theatre. We strive to develop self-confident, happy, versatile and healthy performers and the extensive range of accredited courses that we offer allow us to cater to each individuals' needs and range of abilities. The development of the individual is our main focus; our aim is not only to help you become a consummate dancer and performer but to find, enhance and master your natural gifts. Dance Factory also believes that technique can only take you so far. To be a performer, you have to actually perform in front of an audience, therefore practical performance is a key element of Dance Factory courses. We produce four performances each year, one per term, in a range of situations; from studio to cabaret to theatre.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

Students of all standards—beginner to advanced.
Minimum age is 15 years of age.
Students under 17 can apply for an exemption to leave school.
International students under 18 require parental permission.
No maximum age as long as you are fit enough to keep up with the course.
Auditions for Diploma courses are by appointment. Once your application is received, an audition time will be arranged.

Graduates may find employment opportunities in dance teaching, choreography, and dance, singing & acting roles. Dance production, choreography, and dance teaching are emphasised to broaden the professional career prospects of graduates. Graduates have gone on to become Performers (Dancers, Singers & Actors), Choreographers, Directors, Teachers, and Dance Studio Owners. Students are invited to join Dance Factory's dance and theatrical agency and teacher register. Work can include theatrical productions, television, film, advertisements, corporate functions, cruise ships, theme parks, pantomimes, suit/character work, nightclubs, and promotions. Dance Factory graduates have performed in Asia, the West End and New York, and taught, choreographed and produced across Australia and internationally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be an advanced dancer to enrol in the Diploma of Musical Theatre?

No. The Diploma of Musical Theatre is available as a 1 year full time or 2 years part time course for advanced dancers, OR as a 2 years full time course for students of any standard from beginner to advanced, so dancers at all levels are welcome to apply.

Is an audition required for the Diploma of Musical Theatre?

Yes. Auditions for Diploma courses are by appointment. Once Dance Factory receives your application, an audition time will be arranged.

What financial support is available to students enrolled in this course?

All of Dance Factory's accredited courses offer students a range of State and Federal Government financial support and benefits, including Austudy/Abstudy for Australian students, Youth Allowance for Australian students under 24, a Student Travel Concession, a Relocation Allowance, and CRICOS accreditation for international students. The qualification also enables credit transfer to other institutions.

How often will I perform as part of the course?

Dance Factory produces four performances each year, one per term, in a range of situations — from studio to cabaret to theatre — as practical performance in front of an audience is a key element of Dance Factory courses.

Can I study the Diploma of Musical Theatre part time to fit around work or study?

Yes. The course is available part time over 2 years, with 8–12 classes per week depending on the course. Students can choose from day, evening, and Saturday timetable options to fit around work, school, or university.
