Workplace Communication – Employability
Students will identify, analyse and apply communication, social and intercultural skills for effective interpersonal and workplace relationships. Develops written skills, oral presentation skills and research skills.
Introductory Computing
Develops knowledge and skills in computing systems – software, hardware, digital security, communication networks, internet, information and data management. Includes practical skills in Microsoft Office Suite and basic program design using Pseudocode.
Introductory Mathematics
Designed for students who require a general mathematics background suitable for studies in business, health sciences and computing/IT courses. Covers arithmetic, statistics, algebra, functions, trigonometry, set theory and interest.
Communication Skills
Introduces the foundations of academic writing – library research, selection of academic resources, writing paragraphs and essays, APA referencing and oral presentations. Includes study skills for time management and note-taking.
Project Management
Introduces concepts and skills used by managers to propose, plan, secure resources, budget and lead project teams to successful project completion.
Intercultural Studies
Introduces students to intercultural interaction in the contemporary world, focusing on multiple and diverse audiences, globalisation, cultural symbols and values, language, and intercultural communication skills.
Information Design
Introduces fundamentals of information design and how best to present information using graphics, colour and layout. Covers visual communication principles and desktop publishing.
Foundation Science
Enables students to investigate science issues incorporating aspects of biology, chemistry, and physics. Encourages questioning, reflective and critical thinking about scientific issues.
Professional Science Essentials
Introduces students to the skills required of professional scientists, with a special focus on effective communication. Covers accessing, evaluating and presenting scientific information for scientific and general audiences.
Mathematics for Computing
Presents fundamental topics in mathematics essential to computing studies including propositional and predicate calculus, Boolean algebra, set theory, computer arithmetic, number systems, matrix algebra with applications to computing and cryptography.
Systems Analysis
Develops understanding of systems analysis components including definition of a system, the role of systems analysis, the life cycle of a management information system, use cases, state diagrams, data modelling and data dictionaries.
Programming Principles
Introduces students to the principles of programming, including data manipulation, control structures, and abstraction.
Common Questions
After completing the ECC Diploma of Science (Computing/IT) (Year 2), students can enter the second year of the following ECU degrees: Bachelor of Computer Science majoring in Cyber Security or Software Engineering (2 years remaining), Bachelor of Information Technology (2 years remaining), and Bachelor of Science (Cyber Security) (2 years remaining).
Students who complete the ECC Diploma of Science (Computing/IT) (Year 2) will receive 8 units (120 credit points) advanced standing, the equivalent of the first year, in the respective bachelor's degree at ECU.
For 2026, international student fees are A$27,300 for Year 1 and A$37,000 for Year 2. Domestic student fees are A$17,700 for Year 1 and A$18,100 for Year 2. FEE-HELP is available for eligible domestic students.
Both Year 1 and Year 2 of the Diploma of Science (Computing/IT) have intake dates in February, June, and October each year. Each year of study consists of 8 units and can be completed over 8 to 12 months (2 or 3 trimesters).
A minimum of 50% pass in all units is required for progression to ECU.
