Society and Culture
Provides an introduction to Sociology. Sets up a theoretical foundation for analysing social issues through the exploration of contemporary social problems, and the potential for social change and social justice in culturally diverse societies.
Human Social Behaviour
Introduces the field of 'social psychology' by exploring the theoretical frameworks that help us understand human social behaviour. Students gain an understanding of why individual humans behave in certain ways under certain social conditions.
Exploring Social Diversity
Explores social and cultural diversity, and how these factors relate to professional practice. Prepares students for working in socially and culturally diverse workplaces, exploring differences such as gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality and location.
Human Geography: Where Do We Belong?
Covers the effect of location on the formation of social difference, with a focus on spatial literacy and the use and interpretation of spatial data, equipping students with a social science tool set to analyse the role of place in the formation of identity and social difference.
Australian Indigenous Studies: Closing the Gap
Introduces a range of Australian Indigenous perspectives and knowledges, culturally preparing students for working with Indigenous Australian communities and developing a culturally responsive approach to Indigenous issues.
Professional Investigation and Communication
Equips students with foundational knowledge and skills to communicate effectively in the social sciences, with a focus on written communication skills and communication skills required when working with clients and key stakeholders.

Common Questions
The Diploma of Social Science comprises eight units in total, including six core units and two elective units. Core units cover Society and Culture, Human Social Behaviour, Exploring Social Diversity, Human Geography, Australian Indigenous Studies, and Professional Investigation and Communication. Elective units are chosen based on your intended articulation pathway and include options such as Understanding Human Services, Practice in Human Services, Crime & Criminality, and The Psychology of Health.
Yes. Graduating with a Diploma of Social Science will allow you to transition to second-year studies at Western Sydney University, Sydney City Campus. You can pursue a Bachelor of Social Science with majors including Anthropology, Child and Community, Criminology and Criminal Justice, Disability Studies, Geography and Urban Studies, Heritage and Tourism, Peace and Development Studies, and Sociology.
For 2026, Australian course fees are A$25,000 and international course fees are A$31,700. There is also a one-off non-tuition enrolment fee of A$225.
The Diploma of Social Science has intakes in March, July, and October each year. The course duration is 12 months and can be completed over two or three sessions. The next intake starts 29 June 2026.
Using the Diploma as a stand-alone qualification will allow you to progress to entry level positions in a broad range of fields including Public Service, Support Workers (Disability, Aged Care, Out of Home Care), Youth Worker, Community Development Worker, and Welfare Support Worker.
