About This Course

Whether you have a calling for the ministry or are following a personal spiritual journey, this University of Notre Dame Australia Diploma of Theology provides a compelling introduction to the complex subject of theology. The curriculum covers five main disciplines (Scripture, Church History, Systematic Theology, Moral Theology and Pastoral Theology) to deepen and expand your understanding of the Christian faith. Our Diploma of Theology is a one-year full-time (or equivalent part-time) program at The University of Notre Dame Australia, which provides a basic qualification in theology. The program has been designed for students with no previous background in theological studies or those who might wish to update their theological knowledge. It will especially appeal to students who are preparing for a career in ministry or others who are following a personal journey of spiritual discovery and growth. Theology is the necessary qualification for those wishing to exercise various ministries within the Christian community and to contribute to the work of the Church. It is also the necessary basis for graduate theological study and research.

General Requirements

WA Entry Requirements

Applicants with recent Secondary Education: Indicative ATAR/Selection Rank of 70 OR International Baccalaureate (IB) score of 25
Applicants with Higher Education: Successful completion of 4 subjects at an undergraduate level or higher OR Successful completion of the Notre Dame Tertiary Pathway Program (TPP), or a tertiary preparation program from another institution that is deemed to be of a similar academic rigour to the Notre Dame TPP
Applicants with Vocational Education and Training (VET) study: Successful completion of AQF Certificate IV or higher from an accredited provider such as TAFE or a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
Applicants with Work and Life Experience: Must be 20 years of age as at 1 March in the year of intake and meet one or more of the following: at least two years of relevant work experience, OR Completion of STAT with scores of at least 135 in the Multiple Choice section and 140 in the Written English section, OR Completion of two Year 12 WACE, HSC or equivalent exams with a result equivalent to the Indicative ATAR/Selection Rank

Applicants with Higher Education: Successful completion of 2 subjects at an undergraduate level or higher OR Successful completion of the Notre Dame Tertiary Pathway Program (TPP), or a tertiary preparation program from another institution that is deemed to be of a similar academic rigour to the Notre Dame TPP

Do I need any previous theological knowledge to enrol in the Diploma of Theology?

No previous background in theological studies is required. The program has been designed for students with no previous background in theological studies or those who might wish to update their theological knowledge.

What disciplines does the Diploma of Theology cover?

The Diploma of Theology covers five discipline areas: Scripture, Church History, Systematic Theology, Moral Theology, and Pastoral Theology.

Can I study the Diploma of Theology externally or does it have to be on campus?

The program is available in multiple study modes including External, On Campus, and Blended learning. It is also offered through an exclusive partnership with the Catholic Institute of Sydney (CIS), providing the option to participate externally, at one of the eligible CIS campuses, or through Notre Dame at the Fremantle or Sydney campus.

What are the learning outcomes of the Diploma of Theology?

Upon successful completion of the Diploma of Theology, graduates will be able to: demonstrate theoretical knowledge of Theology in one theological discipline; identify, analyse, synthesise and act on information drawn from theological sources; and transfer and apply theological knowledge and skills in a range of situations.

Is the Diploma of Theology available as a Commonwealth Supported Place?

Yes, the program is available as a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), where the Australian Government pays part of your fees as a subsidy that does not need to be repaid. Students pay the remaining student contribution amount and may choose to pay upfront or defer with a HECS-HELP Loan. International full-fee paying places are also available.
