Course Overview

About This Course

As an oral medicine student, you will learn about the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of diseases of the oral mucosa and salivary glands, facial pain and oral manifestations of systematic diseases such as HIV. You will gain an understanding of the oral health care needs of medically compromised patients, including transplant recipients, in close cooperation with the medical and surgical units of Westmead Hospital. This course is primarily clinical based with didactic sessions and a research component in each semester. This course has a mandatory professional practice work component where subject to contract with the Local Health District (LHD), you may be paid for some clinical sessions (conditions apply), once enrolled in the course.

Requirements

English Language Declaration Form must be submitted with your application (updated form reflects minimum test requirements for results obtained both before and from 23 April 2026)
A copy of current AHPRA Dental Registration certificate (for domestic applicants)
Evidence of current overseas practicing Dental registration certificate showing the expiry date (for international applicants); if issued in a language other than English, provide the original together with an official English translation
A criminal record check before being considered for admission and clinical placement in a NSW Department of Health Facility; international candidates must submit a Criminal Record Check from their own country at the time of application (with official English translation if not in English)
Current detailed Resumé outlining evidence of position as a Dentist, employment history and relevant experience
Contact details of two work-related referees including their name, position, telephone and e-mail address
Proof of identity: a valid passport (biodata page), or alternatively an Australian birth certificate or Australian or New Zealand citizenship certificate for domestic students
Current or final official academic transcripts and their official English translation copy if the original transcripts were issued in a language other than English
Final testamur or proof of completion of your qualification and its official English translation copy if issued in a language other than English
Proof of English proficiency (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL results) where required
English language proficiency requirements include:
- IELTS (academic module): minimum overall score of 7 and minimum score of 7 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking)
- PTE Academic: minimum overall score of 72 and minimum scores of 72 (listening), 72 (reading), 72 (writing), 76 (speaking) for tests taken on or after 23 April 2026
- TOEFL iBT: minimum total score of 96 and minimum scores of 23 (listening), 23 (reading), 25 (writing), 24 (speaking) for tests taken on or after 23 April 2026
- English language proficiency tests must be completed within two years of the date on which you will commence your course
Alternatively, applicants may declare English as their primary language if they meet specified criteria regarding primary/secondary education and dental degree completed solely in English in a recognised country
